Blog 1: Describe your coming of age experience.

Coming of age is seeing the reality of what life is really about. As a child, we would take everyday things for granted. We rely on adults to take care of us financially, physically, & emotionally. As a child we take advantage that our parents would always be there. As we get older, we look at life differently. We are forced to become more responsible and independent. We learn to admit to our mistakes and make the corrections. We respect adults even more because we realize what they go through everyday.
Going to a small private elementary school, I felt that I was being harassed and stereotyped. My parents didn't make a lot of money and the school was mostly made up of wealthy asian people. I was never good academically and had a difficult time in writing and reading comprehension. My teachers would make me feel brainless. Feeling stupid has always been a huge weight on my shoulders.

Entering high school, I still have those feelings that I'm stupid. I had many obstacles during my first year which made my self esteem go down. My low self esteem took part in the mistakes that I made. I take full responsibility for those bad choices. There were things that I took for granted and in the end it back fired on me. I have learned from my mistakes and I am determined to better myself. With time I'm hoping to build up my self esteem and make better choices.

With age you learn from the challenges that you faced. The choices that you make will either make or break you. Only you can make the choices that will change you. Hopefully others will see these changes and see you differently.

  1. Hi Kiana,
Great job on the blog revision...I love the title and the image of you in the sunlight :) Be sure to organize the entries as well. You can use labels to do this...they should be grouped into freshman and sophomore year and then subgrouped. If you're not sure how, Sharmaine or Kristen should be able to show you :)

COA: For the coming of age, you need to select an experience that shows your coming of age. You mention the challenges that you have faced both in elementary and in high school. What you need to focus on would be the "turning point" where you took your first steps to actually overcoming those challenges. I think if you can add that part, it will make for a strong coming of age essay :)
